Nestled within the rolling hills of the North York Moors National Park and a stone's throw from the rustic charm of Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale, High Oaks Grange is more than just a holiday destination; it's a perfect place to connect with nature. Embracing a 'greener' way of enjoying a staycation not only heightens our experience but also works to ensure that this beautiful landscape can be enjoyed for years to come. Here, we provide practical ways for our guests to help us to achieve a greener future.

Here are our top 10 tips to help us create a greener staycation.

  1. Use Public Transport

Make your journey part of the adventure by utilising public transport where possible. It's a great way to cut down on emissions and begin your eco-conscious holiday from the moment you leave home.

Malton Station, which has great connections to York station, is less than 10 miles from High Oaks Grange.

You can also enjoy the benefits of public transport whilst on holiday. Leave the car safely behind our gates and travel to Whitby via one of the UK’s most scenic bus journeys, taking in the stunning North York Moors via the Coastliner 840.

  1. Embrace the Outdoors in Our Eco-Pods

Our Glamping Pods are designed with the environment in mind, offering a comfortable stay with a smaller carbon footprint. Wake up to the sights and sounds of the Vale of Pickering, enveloped in eco-friendly luxury.

  1. Walk, Hike, or Cycle

The North York Moors National Park and Dalby Forest offer miles of trails beckoning the eco-friendly explorer. Engage with the landscape on foot or by bike — it's zero-emission travel that invigorates both body and soul. Most of our properties also offer bike racks so you can safely secure your bikes when relaxing in your holiday accommodation.

  1. Local Exploration

We have so many places to enjoy in the local area that there is no need for long car journeys. Thornton-le-Dale is just one mile away so you can visit the pubs, shops and cafes without even needing the car. Pickering is just over a mile away and can be reached by a longer, leisurely walk. Opt for local attractions within walking distance or short drives to minimise environmental impact.

  1. Shop from Local Businesses

Embrace the local economy by purchasing gifts, goods, and services from nearby vendors. It reduces transportation emissions and supports sustainable tourism. You’ll find some great produce for your BBQs next door at Cedarbarn Farmshop.

  1. Mindful Dining

We use local suppliers in our Welcome Hampers and our guests can also indulge in local cuisine and support the community. You’ll find plenty of inspiration in our Dining Out guide and reviews of local eateries.

  1. Energy Conservation

The Grange and our cottages and lodges come equipped with modern amenities. Be energy-wise by turning off lights and appliances when not in use, and enjoy natural light during the day.

  1. Recycle

Make use of recycling facilities at High Oaks Grange which are available across our 60 acre estate.

  1. Reuse

Avoid single use plastic and pack wisely for your staycation. Reusable water bottles are a great way to ensure you stay hydrated and look after the environment so don’t leave them at home.

  1. Water Wise

Conserve water by taking shorter showers and ensuring taps aren't left running. Don't require your hot tub filling up, let us know. Every drop counts!

By integrating these simple yet effective actions into your stay at High Oaks Grange, you'll contribute to an ongoing commitment to sustainability, ensuring that the beautiful National Park and its surroundings can be enjoyed by future generations. So, as you prepare for a tranquil retreat away from the bustle, remember that a green holiday is a grand holiday at High Oaks Grange.
