Visitors to Thornton-le-Dale will be quite captivated by its quaint scenery and surroundings, olde worlde charm and friendly folk. It is after all known as Yorkshire’s Little Gem, and is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque places to visit in the county.

Passing under small stone bridges, the crystal clear Thornton Beck meanders through the village feeding a lake hidden behind a screen of trees. The renowned Beck Isle Thatched Cottage is situated on the bend of the beck in the village. This famous scene is one the most photographed aspects of the village and regularly features on postcards, calendars and jigsaws.
Thornton-le-Dale offers an excellent array of long established and independently owned shops catering for everyday needs along with restaurants, cafes, pubs, gift shops and much much more. The Green is the focal point of the village and during summer months it hosts the Sunday afternoon event ‘Music on the Green’, creating a relaxing and entertaining ambience with the sound of local bands being heard throughout the village.
Popular annual family events include the Spring Gala, the renowned Thornton-le-Dale Show in August and Decembers switching on of the spectacular Christmas lights with treats such as hog roast, mulled wine, festive stalls and entertainment.
The traditional Thornton-le-Dale show appears in early August, which has grown to become a much loved even for the local community and visitors alike. The village showground is transformed into a playground for all ages with more than 150 trade stands and animal show tents. Animal lovers will be spoilt for choice with the cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and sheep dog displays.
Fabulous walks and strolls to suit all abilities can be taken from the village, with bridle paths and bike trails opening the gateway to beautiful countryside views and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Walks range from a few minutes around the village centre, to two or three hours with maps and directions. There are also some excellent scenic bike rides for all ages and abilities.
Only 1 mile from High Oaks Grange, Yorkshire’s Little Gem, Thornton-le-Dale is without doubt well worth a visit.
