Have you tuned into the Yesterday Channel and found yourself watching the auction of vintage vehicles? Then you will have discovered the programme Bangers & Cash. This is filmed at the Mathewson Garage in our very own Thornton le Dale in North Yorkshire. It attracts a following of avid fans and has placed the picturesque village firmly on the car enthusiast’s map.

The hit documentary series follows the family business who are auctioneers of classic cars and memorabilia. It tells the tales of the featured cars, from Bentleys to Triumphs, and follows the journey to auction and often beyond. The programme has been an enormous success with series 5 just being released in January 2022. This is likely to be down to the enigmatic, flat cap wearing, Derek Mathewson who is at the helm of the garage.

If you wander down to Thornton le Dale from our gates, you will find Mathewson’s Garage on the left hand side of as you enter the village. There is often a crowd viewing the vintage vehicles on the courtyard – from old police cars to the everyday banger.

You can visit the museum whilst on a visit to the garage and view the collection of merchandise including Derek's Tipple in the gift shop. If you are lucky enough to be here on auction day, it is a hive of activity with people travelling from miles around to be part of the action in the local Village Hall.
