Pickering is well known for its steam railway, medieval castle, and charming market town atmosphere - but beyond the usual tourist favourites lies a world of lesser-known treasures just waiting to be discovered. If you're staying at High Oaks Grange and looking to explore off the beaten path, here are five hidden gems within easy reach that offer something a little different.

1. Falling Foss Waterfall & Tea Garden

Location: Near Whitby (30 minutes' drive)
Postcode: YO22 5JD

Tucked away in Sneaton Forest, Falling Foss is a beautiful 30-foot waterfall surrounded by ancient woodland. It’s a peaceful spot for a walk, picnic, or even a wild paddle in the shallow beck below.

Next to the waterfall is Falling Foss Tea Garden, a seasonal outdoor café set in a rustic cottage garden. Homemade cakes, bacon sandwiches, and hot drinks are served from a wooden cabin - and it’s dog-friendly too.

Top tip: Park at May Beck and enjoy a circular woodland walk to the falls and back.

2. Hutton-le-Hole Village & Ryedale Folk Museum

Location: Hutton-le-Hole (25 minutes' drive)
Postcode: YO62 6UA

A picture-perfect moorland village where sheep graze freely across the green, Hutton-le-Hole feels like a step back in time. The Ryedale Folk Museum is an open-air experience featuring historic rural buildings, workshops, and traditional Yorkshire life.

Enjoy local tearooms, browse a few independent shops, and soak up the quiet village charm surrounded by sweeping countryside.

Why it’s a gem: Ideal for slow days, cream teas, and scenic photo stops.

3. Beck Isle Museum

Location: Pickering town centre
Postcode: YO18 8DU

Often overshadowed by Pickering Castle and the NYMR, Beck Isle Museum is a fascinating step back in time. Set in a Georgian riverside building, it features recreated Victorian shops, farming exhibits, vintage cameras, and local trades from years gone by.

It’s family-friendly, surprisingly large, and packed with character - and just minutes from High Oaks Grange.

Bonus: Your entry ticket is valid for a full year, so you can revisit if you're back in the area.

4. Bridestones Nature Reserve

Location: Dalby Forest (20 minutes' drive)
Postcode: YO18 7LT

The Bridestones are naturally sculpted sandstone formations rising from moorland in Dalby Forest. These towering shapes, formed by wind and weather over thousands of years, offer a dramatic setting for a walk.

The circular trail is peaceful, dog-friendly, and much quieter than the busier parts of Dalby Forest.

Good to know: There's a daily entrance fee for Dalby Forest, or you can walk in from Newton-on-Rawcliffe.

5. Talbot Yard Food Court, Malton

Location: Malton (25 minutes' drive)
Postcode: YO17 7FT

Tucked away behind the Talbot Hotel in Malton, Talbot Yard is a small artisan food court home to six independent producers. Highlights include a coffee roastery, gelato parlour, gin distillery, macaron maker, butcher, and bakery.

It’s often overlooked compared to the monthly food market, but it’s a true hidden gem for anyone who appreciates great food and a relaxed vibe.

Perfect for: Foodies, gift-hunters, or a quiet browse with a great flat white.
